Simple Theory Barbera 2022 Awarded Double Gold

Our first-ever Simple Theory Barbera was awarded a Double Gold at Maryland Winemasters’ Choice Competition.

Vineyard Description

Simple Theory’s estate vineyard is located in Maryland’s Linganore AVA within the rolling hills of the Piedmont Plateau. This one-acre block of Barbera was planted in 2015 and is the first Barbera we’ve ever grown, an opportunity presented by increasingly milder seasonal conditions. Situated on an 18% slope with northeast exposure, the site can be tricky to farm, yet it rewards patience and precision with lush, evenly ripened, flavorful fruit.

Growing Season & Harvest

A late spring frost in 2022 was followed by a dry summer, with nice, mild temperatures in the mid-80s. Conditions were just right for moisture mitigation and optimal fruit ripening, creating one of the best vintages seen in decades. The Barbera yielded very large berries and clusters, and the plants were thinned to around six clusters per vine to ensure optimal ripening. Leaves were selectively hand-pulled and more of a canopy was kept on the vines to protect from too much sun exposure until harvest in late September. The result was beautifully ripe fruit and a Double Gold rating for the 2022 vintage!

Sensory Evaluation

Juicy, berry jam notes on the nose mix with notes of bramble and oak. Red fruits, spice and cherry flavors on the palate are supported by nicely integrated tannins that lead to a bright cherry-accented finish.
